The NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYERS ASSOCIATION (NFLPA), the union for professional football players in the National Football League, has implemented several initiatives to address health and wellness, specifically the mental health and wellness of their players and families.
Their newest branded campaign, “Your Mind, Your Body, Your Health,” is an online forum that encourages an open dialogue on issues such as depression and suicide, while debunking many of the common myths and barriers to mental health treatment. Through the voices of players and their families, this campaign increases awareness throughout the wellness community. As they continue to move the conversation forward, some of their other resources include the following:
– A dedicated 800 number for players and their families that provides detailed information about available mental health and wellness resources;
– No cost counseling services for players and their families coping with life occurrences such as transitioning to or from a new community or caring for a sick loved one;
– An internal crisis management protocol where all staff members are trained to respond when faced with a crisis involving a player or his family.
The NFLPA approaches wellness from a holistic perspective, serving players and families while partnering with organizations that serve the larger community. Understanding their impact, reach, and platform, they are committed to embracing a world where it’s okay to ask for help.
